Guide to CIPFA

Below is a brief outline of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), one of the five major accountancy qualifications, including a web address where you can obtain more detailed information and submit questions.

There are many accounting qualifications to consider - some just give you a grasp of the basics while others are more advanced and take in management issues as well as the more technical accountancy training. Different qualifications have different entry requirements, exemptions, study methods, fees and timeframes.

CIPFA

The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) is an accountancy body for public services, whether in the public or private sectors. Many of its members work in local authorities, NHS Trusts, Central Government, utilities,housing and in private companies such as banks, technology companies, retail organisations and firms of accountants.

Admittance to the CIPFA exams is on the basis of either qualifications or relevant work experience. The minimum academic requirements are at least three GCSEs (Grades A - C) plus two A-levels including English and Maths at either level or the equivalent qualifications for Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland.

BTEC and SCITVEC National Certificates and NVQs/SVQs at Level 3 are also accepted.

CIPFA has a flexible study programme, including an open learning systems allowing students to learn when and where they want to. The open learning system can be supplemented with taught college courses or optional short revision courses.

CIPFA created the Advanced Diploma in Business and Financial Management for senior and middle level public service managers wanting to broaden their management base and develop new financial management skills.
