labouring jobs

A trade labourer is a semi-skilled operative who works on site alongside tradesmen on construction projects. Labouring jobs assist bricklayers (hod carriers), plumbers (plumbers mate), electricians (electricians mate), roofers (roofers mate), carpenters (carpenters mate) and scaffolders (scaffolder’s Mate).

Labouring jobs - attention to potential cost implications

Specialist trade labourers (shop-fitting, M+E and housing labourers) need verifiable experience in their particular field. For example, a shop-fitting labourer will have to be used to the 12-hour 7-day nature of the shop-fitting industry and be willing to work flexibly to meet deadlines.

Like M+E labourers, they must appreciate the value of the fittings being installed eg mahogany doors, hardwood panelling and copper piping. Dropping, chipping or misplacing such items can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Experience and knowledge count in labourer jobs

No qualifications are required for labouring jobs but experience and knowledge are both important. Housing labourers will need to be presentable and may be asked to be key-holders so that their reliability and punctuality are paramount to the client. These two character traits wil often be recognised in employers and result in the  individual being employed on future projects.

Candidates are often part qualified within their chosen trade and looking to gain practical experience. Labouring jobs can often involve working outdoors so a willingness to work in the elements and a good level of natural fitness are both very important.
