Gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with Hays Education
Anyone wishing to work as a qualified teacher in England must have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). However, if you are an overseas qualified teacher (OTT), you can work as a temporary teacher for up to four years without QTS.
Gain QTS with Hays Education
Every year, Hays Education - working in partnership with the University of Reading - offers teachers the opportunity to gain QTS. Why not come along to the Taster Events we hold every January and September?
Criteria for Acceptance on the Programme
- You are employed as a teacher in a school
- You have GCSE Grade C equivalent in English and Mathematics (and Science if Primary), or you are taking steps to achieve these
- You hold a UK equivalent degree
- You hold a teaching qualification from outside the UK (and outside the EU)
- You have the support of your school’s Headteacher
- You have the support of a school mentor
- The above support will include observing you teach and giving feedback
- You are teaching in two key stages (or can make arrangements to achieve this)
- You have begun, with the help of your mentor, to compile a portfolio of evidence of meeting the teaching Standards.
Further guidance will be provided on the Programme’s Induction Day and in the Programme Handbook.

About QTS
Suitably qualified OTTs have the option to present themselves for QTS assessment without further training and, in some cases, may also be exempted from the requirements to serve an induction period after qualification.
Teachers without QTS can only work for limited periods in schools where QTS is the normal requirement. You need QTS for a permanent teaching job and to progress to higher pay bands or senior management posts, even if you have additional teaching qualifications or previous management experience.
The QTS Standards are designed to ensure that teachers have the subject knowledge and the teaching and learning expertise they need to teach in England. They are organised in three inter-related sections; Professional values and practice, knowledge and understanding and teaching.
To gain QTS as an OTT, you will need to demonstrate your knowledge and skills to an independent assessor in an English classroom. This means that you cannot gain QTS before coming to England or when you first arrive: you need to be teaching in a school to be assessed.
In addition, you must pass skills tests in numeracy, literacy and ICT before you can be awarded QTS. There is no limit to the number of attempts you can make to pass each test.
