sub-sea / sub-surface jobs

The potential for a varied career in the UK and overseas is greater for sub-sea and sub-surface jobs more than any other sector in Oil & Gas. Opportunities are only likely to grow as finds are made in more remote areas of the world.

Subsurface can be divided into two main areas: exploration and production. Exploration encompasses the key disciplines of Geology, Geophysics, Petrophysics and Reservoir Engineering while production describes the post development phase of an oilfield.

Data interpretation exerience key for sub-surface jobs

Typical onshore roles include Production Technologists, Petroleum Engineers or Wellbore Performance Engineers. Working offshore is more about data collection and performance management role. Mud loggers, Field Engineers or Data Collection Engineers are typical sub-sea job titles.

Most candidates tend to have either a science/engineering degree with a postgrad MSc in Petroleum Engineering or associated course. Some reservoir simulation experience is expected. The main types of software used by the industry are PETREL, ECLIPSE, PROSPER, MBal, GAP and RMS.

Scope for development in UK sub-sea jobs

Subsea denotes activities between the seabed and the surface. Engineers cover all disciplines including Mechanical, Electrical, E+I or Process and most will be from a Process or Chemical Engineering background. Working for a service company you could either be involved in Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV’s), Subsea Wellheads, Downhole Tools, Interventions, Christmas Trees and Drilling.

The potential in the subsea sector is huge. It provides a varied career you can follow from hands on trades (ROV pilots / divers / pipeline welders etc) to designers / project engineers that develop and plan the equipment to be installed.
