The remit of the drainage engineer encompasses the the complete water cycle and includes the design of drainage networks for anything from housing estates to stately homes.  

You role could be responsible for assisting in undertaking drainage assessments and feasibility studies, master planning for major developments, drainage strategies and designs. Or you could be dealing with pumping station design including pressure pipelines, computer hydraulic modelling, flood risk studies, and producing technical reports.

Requirements for drainage engineer jobs

Knowledge of Design to Sewers for Adoption 6th Edition, Sustainable Urban Drainage Solutions (SUD’s) and source control is an advantage. Storm water attenuation to ensure drainage solution is cost effective and meets appropriate standards could be another part of the drainage engineer’s job specification. 

A Civil Engineering or equivalent is the standard requirement: you will need a good understanding of hydraulics, sewer design and modelling land drainage. A strong design background and good working knowledge of Windes Microdrainage and TDS are definite advantages.

Are you a resourceful problem solver?

Working as part of a team is an important pre-requisite as are good levels of personal responsibility, commitment and motivation. You will need to be resourceful with an ability to solve technical problems and work to deadlines. A genuine interest in drainage, flood risk/alleviation and computer modelling will reflect well at interview. Computer literatacy and good communication skills are standard requirements for drainage engineer jobs.
