underwriting jobs
Underwriters assess whether any claims made can be accepted and on what terms. Assessing the likelihood of any claim being made on a policy is the crux of underwriting jobs.
Typical tasks of the underwriter include providing cover on the standard terms of a policy, as well as imposing additional terms where necessary for individual policies, making decisions on where exclusions to an insurance policy are required.
Good analytical skills are a pre-requisite for underwriter jobs, as is the ability to make sound decisions based on the information available to them. Underwriters also need to possess good soft skills and an ability to build good relationships with clients.
Branch out into other insurance jobs
The Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII) offers professional underwriting courses, which some employers will require newly qualified graduate underwriters to take. Underwriting jobs offer scope to specialise in other areas of insurance such as risk management, or into specialist areas such as marine insurance.
