The Trust is one of the UK's most successful and largest healthcare organisations and provides local hospital services to over 500,000 people living in Southampton and South West Hampshire, employment to over 7,000 people and spends in excess of £400 million on seeing one million patients each year.
In addition, we also supply specialist services including neurosciences, cardiac services and children's intensive care provision to more than 3 million people in central southern England and the Channel Islands.
As well as delivering some of the highest quality clinical outcomes in the UK the Trust is also a major centre for teaching and research in association with the University of Southampton and partners including the Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust and Cancer Research UK.
Having operated in a difficult financial environment over recent years the Trust’s key stakeholders have been focusing on recovering large deficits. In light of this, it has made savings of approximately £50m over the past 2 years (2005/06 and 2006/07), equating to a saving of £1 in every eight pound spent; and has now managed to achieve a surplus of £2 million at the end of 2006/07.
The Trust continues its commitment to improving efficiency and will deliver a further £22 million of cost improvements in 2007/08. A surplus of £18m will be made in 2007/08, enabling reinvestments into the estate and clinical quality.
SUHT has recently been approved to enter the application process to become a Foundation Trust. The self-governing status that this brings will be a key enabler as the Trust implements its “2020 Vision” of becoming a national and international centre of excellence.
