Hays Specialist Recruitment

Case study - Legal administrator

Scott, Legal Administrator, JP Morgan, London.

Personal Background?

I worked in international and corporate tax at Arthur Andersen in New Zealand before moving to practice banking and finance for Russell McVeagh in Auckland. I also did a brief in-house stint at a small New Zealand firm before leaving to pursue my OE.

Why did you want to move overseas?

Overseas was an excellent option for both employment and travel reasons. London, being the biggest financial centre in the world, seemed the right fit with my experience and intended career path. London is also an excellent hub for Europe and surrounds, so I can experience the world a lot more easily than from New Zealand.

What are you doing now?

I am now living in London and working for J.P. Morgan Securities Ltd. in its Futures & Options business.

What's the best thing about working and living overseas?

The opportunity to meet new people from all over the world whilst furthering my career. You get to experience a lot of things that are not so readily available back home - easy and cheap travel being one of those things.

And what's the worst?

I miss the sea in New Zealand as have grown up with it always within walking distance, as well as the outdoor lifestyle. The Thames doesn't hold the same appeal!

Have you got any hints and tips for someone planning to work overseas?

Send your CV early and be honest as to your experience - the right role will come your way - but don't lie as it will only come back to haunt you! Also make sure you take a role you want as it will make things much more enjoyable, and once you find a role, the market is big enough to move onwards and upwards if you are not happy.
