Telecoms infrastructure projects require a broad variety of different specialists. These include site design/construction, site survey/audit, structured cabling design and installation, CPE (customer premises equipment) installation and street cabinet installation.
Other types of role include fibre installation, splicing and testing; exchange gun wrapping and kroneing; on-site testing and commissioning; de-installation, de-commissioning and recovery.
Cable jobs for engineers
The most frequently available cabling jobs and infrastructure jobs are for engineers. There are various technical disciplines and the skills required include Cat 5, Cat 6, LLU Exchange installation, 21CN installation (usually Huawei kit), Jumpering, external fibres/transmission, SDH/PDH, MSAN/ITM/DSLAM/Access Hub and System X.
Other cabling and infrastructure jobs include site audit and survey, planning, design, site management and project management. Often people in these roles have started as engineers. Formal training exists in most of the aforementioned technologies and employers will be looking for this when recruiting. Opportunities for engineers include training in new types of kit as well as progression into team leading and management.
Large scale investment to provide cabling jobs in the UK
The biggest project on the horizon for cabling/infrastructure professionals is BT’s 21st century network and this should create increased demand in future. Other large programmes such as those for the 2012 Olympics will require huge resources.
New buildings are typically built with turn-key networks in place so there are good opportunities in commercial construction as well as the demand fuelled by companies replacing their voice and/or data networks.
