A switch can be defined as an electronic device which opens or closes circuits, charges operating parameters or selects paths either on a space or time division basis. A switch will respond to an originator's signals and send this the communication destination.

Switches are manaufactured and designed by a variety of vendors such as Ericsson, Nokia, Nortel, Panasonic, Siemens and Mitel. They can vary in terms of their usage. There are two main types of switches: the PSN Public Switch Network and the PBX Private Business Exchange.

Certification for engineers in switching jobs

There is no specifice type of person required for switches - skills can vary from installation, commissioning, support  to datafill engineer. Training for the various switches this will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

This can can cover such areas as installation, commissioning to datafilling. For the resellers of this equipment it is becoming increasingly important for their engineers to be certified so as to achieve their accreditation from the manufacturers to sell the products.

Importance of data skills for switch jobs

There has been a lot of consolidation  over the last few years with the merger of  a lot of the smaller companies with larger ones. Due to the growth of data networking the Voip market has seen a growth over the last few years.

As a result engineers who were only focused on the voice market have now had to develop their data skills. Salaries are dependent on the type of role and demand for the manufacturers product.
